100 Horror Films to HEAR Before You Die

Seattle’s fantastic Museum of Pop Culture has turned the must-see movie list on its ear with this collection of 100 soundtrack songs that you have to hear before you die. It’s a really fun playlist that shows just how varied movie music can be and how incredibly different it’s become since the medium began.

Listen to the playlist here.

V/H/S/99 - weekend recommendations

V/H/S/99

This latest installment of the found footage franchise takes place in 1999, when videotape ruled and everybody had a camcorder. It’s filled with excellent pop culture nods to the decade like The Real World, Double Dare, skate culture, and more. It also puts an unusual focus on bullying—that seems to be the common thread among the stories that make up the anthology. Released yesterday, it’s fresh for you to watch on the horror streaming service Shudder.

Analog Nightmares - weekend recommendations

Analog Nightmares

In keeping with the ’90s video theme from V/H/S/99, this book—Analog Nightmares by Richard Mogg—examines the rise of horror films shot on video from the early ’80s through to the mid’90s. It features reviews of over 250 films and includes interviews with filmmakers, and some bad-ass VHS cover art.

Halloween Unmasked logo - Weekend Recommendations

Halloween Unmasked

Last week we recommended the Hellraiser episode of the Unspooled podcast. This week we highly recommend co-host Amy Nicholson’s eight-part, in-depth series on Halloween. In it, she goes deep with history, interviews, and a lot of fascinating things about this beloved horror franchise that you might not already know. She talks to doctors, writers, actors, and even John Carpenter himself. If you’re a fan of Halloween—or you just like some excellent film-related journalism—you’ll want to listen to this podcast.
